Harvest Gold: A New Take on an Old Bathroom
Here’s a design dilemma for you…how do you make a bathroom full of harvest gold tile look new again? In this small bathroom update, functionality and practicality were higher on the priority list than style, yet aesthetics were definitely not to be overlooked. This Austin, Texas homeowner wanted to replace an old vanity with a new pedestal sink and get rid of the outdated wallpaper. Easy enough to do, right? Except that removing the vanity reveals a large area of bare sheetrock and the homeowner doesn’t have any leftover original wall tile.

There’s no way to match the color of the 25-year old gold tile, so Room Fu’s Design Guru has the contractor eliminate a row of gold tile all the way around the room and replace it with the same white tile he installs behind the new pedestal sink. It’s a simple and relatively painless fix, and looks like it was always meant to be this way. As for the wallpaper, it’s quickly history and a deep teal green paint provides instant drama.
Closing off a linen closet in the adjacent hallway and opening the same closet into the bathroom provides more convenient access to towels, and also opens up more display space for artwork in a hallway that is visible from the home’s great room.
The finished makeover yields a look that is classic and somewhat vintage, but not at all dated.
