Budget Alternatives to Built-Ins
This couple in Travis Country needed storage solutions for a TV and electronics, as well as for their books, media, and yoga mats. Their initial idea was to do a built-in or two around their fireplace, and also update their wall colors and carpet.

Before Before

Since the cost of custom cabinetry exceeds the budget, Room Fu’s redesign starts with a subdued green on the walls and matching media cabinets the couple assemble themselves. Surrounding the television with box-style shelving makes the TV feel like part of a composition of shapes and less like a dominating force in the room. Adding a large mirror and additional box shelves to the opposite side of the fireplace balances this composition further and offers additional display space and storage. There’s enough symmetry to each side to make sure the fireplace stays the focal point, but not so much as to feel boring or too traditional.

To dress up the cabinets and keep them from being too dark, Room Fu’s Design Guru adds wrapping paper with an ethnic flavor to the back of the sliding glass doors. Since the couple is environmentally-minded, carpet tiles containing a high amount of recycled content are selected to cover the floor. The rich, chocolate brown wool tiles feel luxuriously soft, and the mosaic-style inset rug grounds the seating area.
