A Southwestern Living Room Gets a Modern Makeover
Whoever originally built this house loved themselves some knotty pine. The new homeowners have a much more urban style, so minimizing the pine is Priority One. The Austin couple also want to create a TV-watching space, enhance the fireplace, and somehow make this living room with a whopping 31' width feel cozy and intimate.

Using a paint containing iron particles and brushing rust activator on the dried paint, we achieve a naturally-occurring rusted metal finish on the fireplace. Between this look and a coat of earthy green paint on the walls, the whole room takes on a more loft-like, urban design.
The next step in this interior redesign is to create two zones in the wide space: a media area on one end and a fireside chat room on the other. Bridging these areas is a two-sided conversation couch, created by combining two new sectional corner pieces turned in opposite directions (the orange-brown-green striped piece in these pictures).
We split the existing green suede sectional, creating a comfy couch on the TV side, and use the remaining two pieces as slipper chairs on the fireplace side of the room. The existing cream-colored chair is updated with new upholstery in a rich rust color.
