Modern Meets Traditional, in a Grand Way
Novelist/screenwriter Erin Samiloglu’s newly constructed home in Lakeway features a living room with a soaring 18' ceiling, palatial windows, and a pretty grand fireplace. The writer and her husband have a simple request for Room Fu's Design Guru: "incorporate our existing sofa and oversized chair in your interior design plan, and make it grand...traditional roots with a modern edge...everything else is your call." I'm paraphrasing, but that was the gist. Oh, and I think it's fair to say there were a few New Orleans French Quarter/Mississippi Plantation Style fantasies buried in there as well.
Room Fu's interior design plan starts with a palette revolving around the butter tones of the couple's existing seating. The builder's wall color combines with the upholstery for a nice tone-on-tone effect. To add drama, sweeping stripes in chocolate and gold frame the massive windows and accentuate the ceiling height. Edging the curtains with a band of robin's egg blue brings in an accent color, and coordinating roman shades complete the luxurious window treatments. The fireplace gets its own swath of deep butterscotch paint, to balance the verticals in the curtains and to draw attention to this architectural feature.
A pair of chairs with bold lines are upholstered in a textured robin's egg blue that sets off their dark wood trim. The marble and steel end tables echo the light/dark contrast of the blue chairs and their classic, yet modern design.
An ottoman in a subtle paisley microsuede unifies the color palette and serves as additional seating. The graphic design of the rug makes the room feel fresh and modern.
